English and Literacy

We plan our sequenced Literacy lessons from high quality books from the Power of Reading project that we are part of. In addition children have daily key skills lessons which focus on handwriting, punctuation, grammar and editing skills.
At Smithy Street we use a combination of real books and reading scheme books which have been levelled into “bands” to structure guided and individual reading in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1). In Key Stage 2 (KS2) we use the Accelerated Reader programme to support our children.

Handwriting

At Smithy Street we encourage children to use the "Letter Join Plus" font for cursive handwriting. Parents can support their children by familiarising themselves with the letter formation and the joining strokes the font uses by viewing the poster below. A copy of the sheet can be downloaded HERE.

Phonics

At Smithy Street we follow Letters and Sounds to teach Phonics.
